Group Exercise I:

A) Input and output of nitrogen in agricultural systems (use data from OECD spreadsheet and data from Uruguay statistics).

Use the excel sheet from OECD to analyze and illustrate the following questions:

1. How has the area of agricultural land (arable and grassland) changed since 1980 in your country as compared to Denmark, Mexico, New Zealand, Japan, US?

2. How has livestock changed since 1980 in your country as compared to Denmark, Mexico, New Zealand, Japan, EU and the world?

3. How has the use of Nitrogen in commercial fertilizers changed since 1980 in your country as compared to Denmark, Mexico, New Zealand, Japan, EU and the world?

4. How has the use of Phosphate (P₂O₅) in commercial fertilizers changed since 1980 in your country as compared to Denmark, Mexico, New Zealand, Japan, EU and the world?

5. How is the gross balance of nitrogen and phosphorus changed in Denmark, Mexico, New Zealand, Japan, EU and the world from 1990-92 to 2002-04?

6. Discuss the implications for environment of the changes you are observing in the data from the different countries and world-wide and write down 4-5 main conclusions based on your group discussions
